beware of dog
the world is yours
somewhere near heaven

the gun song

he was drunk depressed and crazy when he bought himself the gun
over the counter in some pawn shop on south main
one feel of that cold steel and he gratefully unwadded
the last fifty dollars to his name

he walked back to the subdivision, into the house
all excited to show her his new gun
she stopped packing right away when he put it to her head and told her
"the thing is, i still love you, hon."

see your reflection in the blue steel and it's too late to run
the romance was gone with that first bruise
see, cupid don't shoot arrows out the barrel of a gun
and love don't make the ten o'clock news

she waited till he passed out, then she dashed her cigarette out
in the crumpled pile of her old wedding gown
she thumbed a ride to fredericksburg got a car there at the hertz
and she stopped into a pawn shop west of town

he tracked her credit card to clovis just to tell her he still loved her
he found her waiting tables in some bar
she smiled, said "oh darlin," slid her hand beneath her apron
and she blew a hole right through that fucker's heart

CHORUS

they acquitted her on grounds of the gun in his cold hand
still she ain't smiled once since that bloody day
they UPSed back both the guns, inherited and owned
so she sold em in some pawn shop on south main

CHORUS
see, cupid don't shoot arrows out the barrel of a gun
and love don't make the ten o'clock news

out there

in the last bar left on first street
he counted back the years
said, "i never planned much
but i never thought i'd still be here."
then he raised his beer, said,
"here's to you, you made it out."
didn't know if i should tell him
out there ain't all you read about

out there
ain't no pot a gold and damn few rainbow
out there
heat still burns and scars heal just as slow

out there's just someplace else boys can't figure girls
and the assholes in the suits and ties still rule the world
and the dream of America ends when the alarm clock wails
by day it's same-old-job, same debt, same TV fairy tales

CHORUS
we go looking for oz or shangri la, wind up everywhere else
out of the frying pan and into hell

where first street ends the highway heads on outta town
and it hooks up with the interstate bout 20 miles down
and every exit's got its dreamers belly up to some local well
and there's a broken dream for every mile 'tween here and somewhere else

we go looking for oz or shangri la, wind up everywhere else
out of the frying pan and into hell

anacostia  RealAudio Sound Clip

We built our campfires down by the Potomac
Shouting distance from Hoover's door
Shared our stories of Flanders' bloody fields
Who we lost, who we killed and what we did it all for

Three hundred hungry men set out from Portland
By Washington, twenty thousand voices filled the air
All asking Hoover only just for what was owed us
A pittance to everything we left over there

Anacostia
MacArthur's coming to raze us to the ground
God damn old man'll never know all that went up
When he burned Anacostia down

Last day he sent the cavalry down Pennsylvania
Boys who might've been our brothers fifteen years ago
They say they're comin' cross to Anacostia tonight
And if you smell the tear gas, buddy, god, just keep your head down low

Today they called my grandson up for Vietnam
For democracy they say again but these days I don't know
I think I saw just what we fight for in MacArthur's eyes
Night he turned the bayonets around on his own

CHORUS
When he burned Anacostia down
When he burned Anacostia down
When he burned Anacostia down
Down
Down

angelita turns  Free MP3 Download

Angelita dances in the rain
Washes down her body like a dulcet refrain
She turns in little circles, lost on her own plane
A glow to put the street lamps all to shame

Angelita turns
And the world moves in slow motion
Angelita sways
And my heart ceases to beat
Angelita breathes
And my breath goes from my body into hers
Angelita, what the hell'd you do to me

Angelita holds me as she sways
Warm rain caresses us like a lover's soft embrace
Just this patch of Euclid Avenue, just the glance of her face
And the rest of this damn world just melts away

CHORUS
Angelita, what the hell'd you do to me

Max, courtesy of T.J. Rizzo, Dallas, TX
She plays guitar in Czechtown, open mic nights at the taverns
Sings country songs that no one's heard since forty years ago
She smiles back at the awestruck boys who stare up from the darkness
She'll even smile some later when she tells 'em, thank you, no

She married him at twenty-four in 1987
Separated by '89
Aw, hell, she says, it wasn't really even him no more
Still she drives to Independence just to visit him some time

Saint Claire of Cedar Rapids only does what anybody would
If anybody walked this earth in angel's grace
Saint Claire of Cedar Rapids, I'd come unto you upon my knees
If only you would kiss my sins away

She walks to work alone each day down by the river
She tells herself a poem she once read or maybe wrote
They say that all the birds and bugs stop chirpin' just to listen
As if it were a song sung by an angel flying low

Works the job for the insurance, says she won't quit or divorce him
Till the state says he don't need it anymore
But some nights after just enough Old Weller she might tell you
She wonders what the hell God put her on this planet for

CHORUS
Saint Claire of Cedar Rapids, I'd come unto you upon my knees
If only you would kiss my sins away

Hangdogs Fun Fact

waltz this waltz alone

This barroom ain't my home, but I guess it'll do for now
I got no place else to go anyhow
'Cause outside that door lies the world, the one slowly driving me mad
But in here they got Shiners and Pearls and that ain't so bad

There's a song, there's an angel
There's a road for me out there I know
But right now the best I can do
Is to waltz this waltz alone

Bartender's the only job here; you can check all the rest at the door
And love in here don't last forever, but it might until four
This grownup world ain't the utopia the grownups all told us it was
So this glass keeps it focused so it means even less than it does

CHORUS
There's a song, there's an angel
There's a road for me out there I know
But right now the best I can do
Is to waltz this waltz alone
Is to waltz this waltz alone

I hear you're living with some pasty post-punk Brit
And that every martini bar in Soho thinks you're the shit
They say we got lives to live, so let's burn this fucking bridge
Cast the ash upon the water and drink until we forget

Meet me down at Tommy's for one last round, toast the asshole you made of me
We can fire up the juke, play a Hangdogs song, so I can regain some self-esteem
Meet me down at Tommy's we can close it down and you can give me back my key
I want to see you one last time, then just a blur where you used to be

Smoke cigars and spout your angst-filled free-verse poetry
Hell, girl, it ain't what you say, it's what they see

I hear you're hanging with the hippest of crowds
Hear you spout Kerouac and dress real seventies to do any poseur proud
Good luck with your new nose-ring, and if you ever want more than the latest thing
I'll be down at Tommy's drinking Pabst and playing loud

CHORUS
I want to see you one last time, then just a blur where you used to be

other people's houses

I got an alternate means of luxury for to raise myself some cash
Requires a little finesse, a little luck and a whole lotta kissin' ass
I really like when people thank me, they say c'mon back anytime
And if you think I've got a screw loose, curiosity's not a crime

I like other people's houses, I like to hang out on your couch
I like to walk your dog, pet your cat and come over when you're out
I like to use your channel changer, watch my favorite TV shows
I like other people's houses, I like 'em better than my own

Now I'm no thief or con man, you know I harbor no ill will
Just like to poke around your icebox, let my belly get its fill
I'm on my best behavior, sayin "thank you, you're too kind"
And where's your liquor cabinet anyway and are you sure that you don't mind

CHORUS

Now when I come to your place, we're gonna have us a grand old time
We'll get pay-per-view and pizza and open up all your red wine
And you and me'll do something different than we do most every day
And I'd invite you back to my place, but it's here I'd rather stay

CHORUS
I like 'em better than my own
I like 'em better    than my own

Hangdogs Fun Fact

come the night  Free MP3 Download

You can see him come the night by the glow of his cigarette
In that same old rusty chair in the backyard, next to the empty flower bed
And he'll tell you bout that car up there on blocks
How he climbed into it stoned one night and drove
Away from Oklahoma and a habit and a wife
And a bed that anymore he didn't share with her alone

By day he pushes wheelchairs down at the Lutheran home
At six he heats a pot pie and he listens to oldies radio
But come the night he'll take that bottle from the shelf
And one more time he'll try to dull the pain
Of ideals lost in orders and the tracers just like lightning
Lighting up the sky over Hue

Come the night
He says "God forgive me what I was"
Come the night
He says "God forgive me everything I did"
Come the night
He says "God forgive me, but God damn me if I ever forget"

All our folks they call him crazy, but he pays no mind
He reads to us from Ecclesiastes and he cries sometimes
See, long ago that little man across the tracks
He sent least thirty souls back to the Light
Some might call him "hero," but he knows otherwise
When he sees them all again every night

CHORUS
Come the night
He says "God forgive me what I was"
Come the night
He says "God forgive me everything I did"
Come the night
He says "God forgive me, but God damn me if I ever forget"

Hangdogs Fun Fact

beware of dog  RealAudio Sound Clip

I been lying around the whole damn day
Come on baby it's time to play
Can't you hear me scratching at your back door
Don't tell me to hush, it's time to howl
Don't tell me to sit, it's time to prowl
Don't throw me no bones, 'cause, baby, tonight I need a little something more

I'm headed down to the kennel club
Gonna lap some beer and scarf some grub
Maybe I'll chase some cars on down the street
I got an itch and I'm scratching it
Like it led to both kibble and bit
Baby, I am one stone mongrel mutt in the throes of a Texas heat

I'd be better, but I'm too bad
I'd be saner, but I'm too mad
If you wanna play it safe, I think you had
Best beware of dog

I been lying around the whole damn day
Come on, baby, it's time to play
Let's forget that leash, least for now
I won't beg and I won't whine
But I might roll over if so inclined
I'm a real good boy, I think it's time that you found out just how

CHORUS
I'd be better, but I'm too bad
I'd be saner, but I'm too mad
If you wanna play it safe, I think you had
Best beware of dog
Best beware of dog
Best beware of dog

the world is yours

We pledged allegiance to the stars and stripes and you
We walked in single file just like all your good tin soldiers do
Your textbooks told us we could all be president if we tried
You said Christ saved us all with the turn of a cheek
While you sent our fathers cross the sea to pacify the meek
You told us God decreed they die their souls to save, but you lied

You said we're free to do just what we want but told us what we should
Your advertisements told us what we'd get if we were good
You said the bad man on the TV news was just born that way, into sin
You bade us learn but only what we'd need to make a buck
You said "ideals are fine for now but soon you'll be growing up"
You said, "this world ain't fair, and the race goes to the strong," and I guess you win

The world is yours
I'm just passing through
I want nothing more from you
Given or earned
'Cause this land damn sure ain't my land
And this poisoned world it ain't God's plan
It's yours
Take it and burn

You give us jobs so we could by the crap we make for you
You give us credit in lieu of indentured servitude
You give us leaders starched and sanitized, handpicked from the ranks of your devout
You measure freedom by your dividends down at the Bank and Trust
I guess that means that you're a lot more free than most of us
In your pristine suburban castles with the hedgerows and the fences all around

CHORUS
The world is yours
I'm just passing through
I want nothing more from you
Given or earned
'Cause this land damn sure ain't my land
And this poisoned world it ain't God's plan
It's yours
Take it and burn

somewhere near heaven

Hey little girl with the angel brown eyes and the face full of shadow and light
I still see you there in my arms when I wake and I wonder just what I did right
I see the soft slope of your body moonlit through the leak in the motel room blind
And now through this distance and time and travail this bed still feels empty where you used to lie

I wade through the flotsam of empire's decline
I watch ideals shatter on rich men's design
But sometimes I still feel you holding me somewhere near heaven
Just outside of time

Hey little girl I don't mean to hang on, hell, I guess I been getting along
It's just in these damn little moments of nothing I wonder just what I did wrong
I know I ain't pretty or any great find, it's just when the cogs of this life start to grind
I miss you and hope that you find something like we had
Somewhere near heaven, just outside of time

CHORUS
Yeah sometimes I still feel you holding me somewhere near heaven
Just outside of time
